Not only did Cody score the natural hat trick in the first period of the game, she scored the goals even strength, shorthanded and on the power play shifts.

"I guess I didn't even think of it like that. I didn't even realize that," said Cody, who was humble about the feat.

The hat trick was the bright spot for the Beavers. BSU escaped with the victory only after the referee's no-goal ruling on a SCSU shot with 1.1 seconds held up under video review.

"I think we played pretty sloppy at the end there, but we can be happy that we took two points out of the game," Cody said.

"Tomorrow we have to come out and put the game away early and not make it as close."

The Beavers improved to 3-4 overall (1-2 WCHA) this season and moved out of the WCHA cellar with the win. St. Cloud State dropped to 0-8 overall (0-5 WCHA). The two teams wrap up the weekend series today at the BREC at 2:07 p.m.

Bemidji State goalie Zuzana Tomcikova finished with 23 saves. Down 3-0 at the start of the third period, the Huskies made a game of it on Kylie Lane's goal 38 seconds into the period and Brittany Toor's goal at 10:53.

"I think a couple of years ago we would have been happy to win a game the way we played, but not today," Bemidji State head coach Steve Sertich said.

The Bemidji State offense outshot St. Cloud State 45-21, but a number of odd-man rushes and defensive lapses forced Tomcikova to make highlight-reel saves down the stretch. Huskies goalie Ashley Nixon finished with 18 saves.

Bemidji High School alum and current SCSU senior Courtney Josefson was recognized in the starting lineup before the opening face-off. She played on the Huskies fourth line but did not record a point or a shot in the game.

Once the puck dropped, Cody took over.

She opened the scoring at 10:45 of the first period when she made a move to her backhand at the right side of the net and beat Nixon's blocker.

Cody struck again three minutes later when she scored shorthanded on a sharp-angle shot to the left of Nixon to give the Beavers a 2-0 lead.

Cody's hat trick goal on the power play initially was credited to Emily Erickson. With 24 seconds left in the first period, Erickson appeared to have batted the goal out of midair following a scrum at the crease.

The goal, Cody's team-leading sixth of the season, was changed between periods when Erickson said she didn't hit the puck.

"Those were some brilliant college hockey goals," Sertich said.
