She can trace her Swedish heritage back to Olaf Oscar Vidmark, a Swedish folk violinist who played for the King of Sweden. The Vidmark descendants immigrated to America and settled in Minerva Township, west of Bemidji. Her first experience with Sweden came in 2001, when she visited her mother's family in Göteborg. That trip motivated her to learn Swedish. During the summer of 2007, she was able to attend a high school credit session at Concordia Language Village Sjölunden.

She was a senior attendant in the 2006 Sankta Lucia Festival and said she is honored to represent her Swedish culture and heritage as Lucia this year.

She said she hopes to be able to return to Sweden for school or possibly to live there.

Elena enjoys playing violin and piano and is a member of the BHS Chamber Orchestra. She is a captain of the BHS Math League, co-president of the National Honor Society and a youth leader at the Bemidji Evangelical Free Church.

The early morning smörgåsbord and festival will take place at 6 a.m. Dec. 13 at the Bemidji State University Beaux Arts Ballroom. Tickets are $17 for adults and $6 for children 8 and younger.

Tickets may be purchased at Kelsey's As You Like It in downtown Bemidji, Ken K. Thompson Jewelry at the Paul Bunyan Mall and downtown Bemidji, by calling Bonnie Lundorff 759-2310 or by mail with full payment and a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Lloyd Johnson, 208 Norwood Drive N.E., Bemidji, MN 56601.
