Edward James St. Peter, 93

Edward James St. Peter, 93, of Buhl, Minn., formerly of Maple Ridge Township, Beltrami County, died Thursday, April 23, 2009, at University Medical Center-Mesabi in Hibbing, Minn.

A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the United Methodist Church, 307 First Ave. S.W. in Chisholm, Minn., with the Rev. Barbara Hegfors and the Rev. Ned Berube officiating. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Monday in Island Lake Cemetery, Island Lake, Minn.

Landmark Funeral Home of Virginia, Minn. assisted the family with arrangements.

He was born Dec. 18, 1915, to Merrick and Elsie (Duhamel) St. Peter in Maple Ridge Township, Beltrami County. He served in the 147th Infantry as a First Scout in the area of Bizerte North Africa during World War II. He was wounded in action and was awarded the Purple Heart and numerous other citations. He married Lorraine Olsen June 8, 1952, in Bemidji. They moved to Buhl where they raised seven children.

He was employed by the Oliver Iron Mining Company on the track gang and retired from USS MinnTac Control Room after 31 years of service. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, deer hunting, square dancing, bird watching and, in his later years, quilting.

He is survived by his wife; daughters, Patricia (Edward) Meister and Carol Rhodes of Spooner, Wis., Donna (Joel) Manns of Duluth, Susan (Ned) Berube of St. Paul, Bonita (Dean) Johnson of Bemidji and Julie Vick of Buhl; son, James (Mary) St. Peter of Delta Junction, Alaska; 22 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; sister, Norma Andree; brothers, Bernard and Lester St. Peter, all of the Bemidji area; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson and brothers, Howard and Leo St. Peter.
