She was born March 5, 1913, to Lars and Laura (Anderson) Engelstad in Holst Township, Minn. She attended country school and later moved with her family to Nymore, where she completed her education. She was very active in her area youth group.

She married Wilfred Nelson May 18, 1932, in Bemidji. They lived in Duluth, Minn., for a few years, but returned to the farm in Holst Township to raise their four sons. She was very supportive in her sons' activities, such as 4-H and school sports.

In 1960, she was employed as a nurse's aide at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook. A few years later, she began employment at Clearwater County Memorial Hospital, first as a nurse's aide, and then in 1972, at the age of 59, she became a licensed practical nurse. Her husband died in 1982, weeks before their 50th wedding anniversary.

She remained on the farm and continued working at the hospital until her retirement at age 72 after 25 years of medical service.

She continued to enjoy her flower gardens, watching the birds at the feeders, watching professional golf tournaments and watching soap operas. She enjoyed attending school activities and events with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking for the family. She was actively involved in the church, attending most functions, and especially enjoyed being a part of Mission Friends at Elim Lutheran Brethren Church.

In 2001, due to declining health, she moved from the farm into Brookfield Apartments in Clearbrook. In 2006, at the age of 93, she became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook, receiving care at the same facility she had given care for more than 40 years. She remained there until her death.

She is survived by her sons, Duane (Edith) Nelson of Aurora, Minn., Douglas (Marilyn) Nelson of Chaplin, Saskatchewan, Bruce (Marilyn) Nelson of Clearbrook, and a daughter-in-law; sisters, Myrtle Johnson of Clearbrook and Marilynn Vandermeer of Braman, Okla.; a sister-in-law; 11 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Gary Nelson, a great-grandson; and siblings, Marvin, Cora, Pauline, Petra, and Irene.
