Child, father die after kayak overturns on Hart Lake in Hubbard County

Edith Irene Salvevold, 89, of Bemidji, MN died on Sunday, February 22, 2009 at the Gold Pine Homes in Bemidji.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Bemidji, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Interment will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted with the arrangements.

Edith was born February 3, 1920 at Bagley, MN the daughter of Frank and Nellie (Milton) Bromaghin. Edith graduated from Bagley High School in May of 1937. She attended Bemidji Teachers College and her first teaching job was at Buzzle School. From 1939-1942 she taught at rural elementary schools in Pinewood, Shevlin and Debs. Edith married Johnnie Salvevold on June 26, 1943 at Bagley. She taught first grade at Bagley and was also the Elementary Principal from 1948-1956. While teaching she attended the University of Duluth and completed her Bachelors of Science Degree in Education in 1960. She taught elementary and was the elementary principal in Silver Bay from 1956-972, retiring in 1972. Some time after retiring from teaching She and Johnnie moved to Cass Lake and then to Bemidji. She volunteered at elementary schools in Bemidji helping children with reading.

She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church and active in the Bethel Circle. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Minnesota Chapter. She loved to quilt and taught quilting. She was a member of the Paul Bunyan Quilters. Should friends so desire, expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to the Evangelical Covenant Church or an organization of your choice.

She is survived by her nieces, Dorothy (Orville) Gubrud of Shevlin; Rae (Jerry) Kellgren of St. Paul, Minn.; Jeanne (Mike) Hanse of Bagley; Mary Nielson of St. Paul; Barbara (Chuck) Maki of White Bear Lake, Minn.; Arlene (Glenn) Olson of Duluth, Minn., Marlyce Kirtland of Danbury, Wis., Carol (Gerry) Granley of Cloquet, Minn., Jean (Lynn) Schmidt of Bemidji and Sandra (Gary) Krohn of Bemidji; nephews, William Bromaghin of Bagley, Dennis (Phyllis) Bromaghin of Bagley, Frank Bromaghin of Arkansas, Mike Bromaghin of Two Harbors, Minn. and Milo (Mary) Meland of Minneapolis; dear friends, Joel and Lin Ward of Bemidji; 10 nieces and nephews in California and Massachusetts.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers, Henry, Richard, Cecil, Eugene, Dan and Glen Bromaghin and sisters, Genevieve Ellis and Beatrice White.
