East Grand Forks rides late surge to beat Bemidji girls basketball
East Grand Forks finished a 59-50 win over the Bemidji girls basketball team by going on a 14-2 run over the final four minutes of the game on Friday.
Bemidji (10-9) led for the first 32 minutes of the game, but only managed to score 17 points in the second half.
"They changed things up defensively," Bemidji head coach Rick Kehoe said. "They played two girls on Jess at all times. We couldn't seem to get the ball to the right people at the right time, and when we did we couldn't score."
A runner in the lane from Cheyenne Woods gave the the Lumberjacks a 13-8 lead with 11:50 remaining in the first half.
A fastbreak layup from Dani Gronhovd increased the Bemidji lead to 31-22 with less than three minutes left in the first halftime.
Gronhovd led the Lumberjacks with 12 points.
The Green Wave finished the half by going on a 7-2 run, but still trailed the Lumberjacks 33-29 at the half.
"We were moving the ball well," Kehoe said of the first half. "If we would have made more free throws and closed out on defense in the first half, we might have had a 12 or 14 point lead instead of a four point lead."
A putback from Jess Yost with 9:40 left to play ended a scoreless stretch for both teams that lasted nearly four minutes.
Bemidji led 44-41 with 9:10 remaining.
A 3-pointer from Kelsey Schlenk ended the Green Wave scoring drought that lasted over six minutes.
The Lumberjacks held on to a 46-44 lead with under six minutes remaining. The Green Wave grabbed their first lead of the half at 48-46 thanks to a three-pointer from Aubrie Carlstrom with 3:55 left to play.
Carlstrom led all scorers with 25 points on five made three-pointers.
The three-pointer was the beginning of the scoring run that fueled EGF's win.
The Lumberjacks went almost 11 minutes in the second half without committing a foul.
"We were playing smart basketball," Kehoe said. "It is always nice to go deep into a half without having to worry about who is in foul trouble."
Bemidji will play at Crosby-Ironton at 7:30 on Thursday.
