Early goals lead Gophers past Bemidji St.

MINNEAPOLIS – The Bemidji State University women’s hockey team fell to top-ranked Minnesota 8-0 in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action Friday night Ridder Arena.

The loss drops BSU to 6-21-2 and 5-19-1 in the WCHA. The Gophers continued their run at an undefeated season, improving to 31-0 and 25-0 in the league.

BSU fell behind early Friday and was unable to recover.

Amanda Kessel, the nation’s leading scorer, opened the scoring eight seconds into the game by redirecting a cross-crease feed from Hanna Brandt. Only 59 seconds later, Rachael Bona put her own rebound past BSU goaltender Abby Ryplanski and the trend was established.

Ryplanski, and Jessica Havel who entered the game in the second period, combined for 38 saves.

The teams complete their series 4 p.m. today.
