Duluth sweeps Mudcats
DULUTH - The Bemidji Mudcats dropped a doubleheader Sunday at Duluth, falling 4-1 in the opener and losing 5-4 in the rematch.
Mudcats pitcher Jeremiah Graves allowed only four hits in the first game but his offense also could muster only four hits.
Bemidji's lone run came in the fifth when Tony Klaers singled, gained second and third on wild pitches and scored on Graves' groundout.
Duluth scored once in the first and took a 2-1 lead with an unearned tally in the fifth. The home team added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth, both of them unearned as the Mudcats committed two errors in the frame.
Klaers, Kevin Murphy, Neil Huewe and Jaryd Marks had Bemidji's hits, all singles.
In the rematch the Mudcats owned a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh but Duluth rallied with a pair of runs in its last at-bat to claim the victory.
Bemidji opened the scoring in the top of the first when Dylan Webb singled and Marks doubled him home. In the third consecutive singles by Trevor Purvis, Marks and Huewe combined for a run and Kevin Murphy's single, an error and a wild pitch produced a run in the fourth.
The Mudcats capped their scoring in the fifth as Purvis reached and Marks doubled him home.
Duluth drew within 4-3 with a run in the lower sixth and used a walk, single, stolen base, two wild pitches and a groundball to score the tying and winning runs in the seventh.
Marks went the distance on the Bemidji mound.
