Joan Pearson is a good example of proving that dreams can come true. She had always wanted to own a gift/antique store and 10 years ago, she did just that -- she started her shop called The Duck.

Prior to getting into the retail business, Pearson was a beautician for 35 years and then ran a bar where The Duck is now located for six months.

"We didn't want to do the bar, so we tried to sell it," she said. "Times weren't good when we attempted to sell, so my husband asked me what I'd like to do with the space. I said, 'silly man, I know exactly what I want to do. I want to open an antique shop' and that's exactly what I did."

After cleaning up what used to be a bar, Pearson opened The Duck for business July 1, 2000.

The idea for the shop came easy to Pearson.

"I had a few ideas, but I wanted something original," she said. "I wanted people to identify the product they got from my store with the name of the town. When people like something they got here, they will remember they got it in Blackduck."

The Duck has taken on new looks and themes over the years before reaching the antique and gift atmosphere it holds today.

"At first we were a resale business and people would bring stuff in," she said. "Little by little, I changed it to antiques. I've seen my shop grow a lot over the years."

As Pearson began ordering merchandise to revamp the look of her shop, she explained the extensive research she put into this project.

"I research every single company I order from," she said. "I like to know where my stuff comes from, how good the product is and the reputation of each individual company."

Pearson said she will usually get samples of some things that she orders to experience her merchandise first hand.

"When people come into my store, I want them to like what they see and most of all, I want them to have fun," she said.

As part of her dream, Pearson wanted to have a memorable store.

"The customers I get come from all over," she said. "Almost all of them come back, too."

Treating her customers good is something very important to Pearson. She explained how people should never be afraid to ask her about price adjustments.

"If I can lower my price on an item, I will."

Currently, The Duck has a huge 50 percent off sale on selective merchandise that will run until May 1.

"I'm really excited about this sale," Pearson said. "I have never really done something this big. I have some customers call me and they're upset they can't get here until July and they're missing the sale. I told them I'd do something again in July, and I will."

The Duck is located on Main Street in Blackduck and is open Wednesday-Friday 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m.
