Duane George Cobenais Jr., 41, of Red Lake, died Sunday, April 26, 2009 in Thief River Falls, MN.

Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm, Saturday, May 2, 2009 at the St. Mary's Mission Catholic Church in Red Lake, with the Rev. Pat Sullivan officiating. A wake will begin at 11:00am, Thursday, April 30, 2009 at the Little Rock Community Center in Red Lake, and will continue until the time of the service. Interment will be at the St. Mary's Mission Catholic Cemetery in Red Lake, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.

He was born on September 20, 1967 in Red Lake, the son of Duane Sr. and Dorothy (Oakgrove) Cobenais. He was raised in Redby and attended school in Red Lake. As a Red Lake Warriors basketball player, No. 33, he hit 1000 points in basketball in 1985. He worked for the Red Lake Police Department for 2 years. He then drove bus for the Red Lake School District for the past 23 years. For the past 16 years he would do seasonal work for the Red Lake DNR in the summertime. He coached in a number of sports. He coached Northern Lights League Baseball, Bemidji Youth League baseball, the Red Lake Pepsi men's softball team, and basketball from 3rd graders up to the varsity team, all the way to the PaceSetter's state tournament in St. Cloud, Minn. He was a member of the Little Rock Community Board. After being together since 1982, he married Michelle Barrett on July 20, 1996 in Red Lake. He enjoyed going to the 7 Clans Casino in Thief River Falls in his free time. He loved spending time with his family, teasing, laughing, and playing sports with his sons. His pride and joy was his granddaughter, Derrica "Ruggers" Cobenais, who called him "Bubba."

He is survived by his wife, Michelle Cobenais of Red Lake, Sons, Duane "Boogins" Cobenais III of Thief River Falls, MN, Derrick Cobenais of Red Lake and Derald "Ola" Cobenais of Red Lake; Granddaughter, Derrica "Ruggers" Cobenais of Red Lake, and Bemidji, Brothers, Myron (Crystal) Cobenais of Redby, Mike (Lee Ann) Cobenais of Redby, Gary (Jami) Cobenais of Redby; Mother, Dorothy Cobenais of Redby; Godmother, Audrey Cobenais of Red Lake numerous nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; uncles, Donald Cobenais, Darrell Cobenais, Harold Cobenais, Stanley Cobenais and Martin Cobenais; aunt, Margaret Cobenais, special nieces, Marilee Brun, Miki Jo, Noelle, and Michaelanna.

Active Casketbearers will be Myron Cobenais, Mike Cobenais, Gary Cobenais, Rick Barrett, Ringo Needham, Craig Maxwell, Al Wolden, Jerry Stately, Duane "Ole" Spears, Wally Holstein, Randy Benais, George Graves, Jay Huseby, Marty Cobenais, T.J. Cobenais, and Jim Lasley Jr.

Honorary Casketbearers will be Jeremy "Slim" May, Roger Strong, Roger White Jr., Brandon "Bita" Olson, John Graves, Mike "Paparazzi" Barrett, Bob Dudley, Joel Rhode, Joe Buck Schoenborn, Leonard Spears Jr., Donovan English, Mike Roy, Red Lake DNR Staff, Red Lake Pepsi Softball Team, Red Lake School Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, and Head Start Staff.
