Driving is treacherous as winter storm hits the Bemidji area

Roads in and around the Bemidji area are extremely treacherous, and visibility is very limited in open areas, as a winter storm roars through the region. A winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service out of Grand Forks, N.D.

The NWS says snow will develop today above southeastern North Dakota and spread northeast across most of the area by midday.

Heavy snowfall and high winds are expected to produce blizzard-like conditions and make travel extremely hazardous, according to the NWS.

The heaviest snow will fall along and south of a line from Lisbon to Fosston to Baudette, where up to one foot of snow is expected, the NWS reports.

Also in effect for the area until 7 a.m. Wednesday is a Hazardous Weather Outlook, which states that heavy snow is expcted today and tonight as the the area may accumulate 6-12 inches of snow, according to the NWS.

Windchills will fall to between 25 and 35 degrees below zero Tuesday night.

The full forecast is as follows:

Late Afternoon: Snow and widespread blowing snow. The snow could be heavy at times. High near 0. Wind chill values as low as -28. Blustery, with a north northwest wind around 29 mph, with gusts as high as 43 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches possible.

Tonight: Snow likely and widespread blowing snow before 1am, then areas of blowing snow and a chance of snow after 1am. Cloudy, with a low around -12. Wind chill values as low as -37. Blustery, with a north northwest wind between 21 and 28 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Wednesday: Areas of blowing snow. Partly sunny, with a high near 1. Wind chill values as low as -36. Northwest wind between 13 and 18 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around -16. Wind chill values as low as -32. West southwest wind around 8 mph.

Thursday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 19. South southwest wind between 8 and 10 mph.

Thursday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 0.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 29.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 14.

Saturday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 37.

Saturday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 20.

Sunday: Partly sunny, with a high near 37.

Sunday Night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 22.

Monday: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 39.
