Dr. Clyde Books, 88, of Bemidji, Minn. Died Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at GoldPine Home, Bemidji.

Memorial Services will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, Bemidji with Fr. Don Braukmann and Fr. Bill Mehrkens officiating. Inurnment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Mendota Heights, MN.

Dr. Clyde Books was born in Gates, NE on June 19th, 1924. The family moved to Broken Bow NE where he and his three brothers and three sisters grew up & went to school, and where he first met his wife, Mary Tobkin. He graduated from Broken Bow High School.

He served as a pilot in the Army Air Corp during WWII, and continued to fly and have a strong interest in aviation throughout his life. Clyde and Mary were married after the war on August 16, 1947 and he went to school on the GI bill and became a Veterinarian, graduating from the University of MN Veterinary School. They became lifelong friends with his classmates and their wives.

In 1958, their daughter, Terry was born in St. Paul MN, and in 1960 Dr. Books bought the Veterinary practice in Bemidji from Dr. Given. And so began their lives in Bemidji. They have lived in Bemidji and been a part of the community for 52 years.

In 1975 he built a new building, which is the Bemidji Veterinary Hospital today, next to the Bemidji Locker Plant and across from Trinity Lutheran Church.

When they retired Clyde and Mary enjoyed traveling and eventually bought a home in Mesa AZ, where they enjoyed many visits from friends and family. They continued to enjoy spending time with Terry and her husband, Craig, and their grandsons, John and Josh.

They spent the last six years living at GoldPine Home in Bemidji. They made new friends there and continued to cherish their old friendships.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Books of Bemidji; daughter, Teresa (Craig) Nichols of Andover, Minn.; grandchildren, John Thomas Nichols and Joshua William Nichols; 2 sisters, Jean (Jim) Feild of Hampton, VA and Vaughn (Ton) DeVos of Birmingham, AL and 1 brother, Bob (Pat) Books of Scottsbluff, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hazel Books; brothers, Harold and Norval; sister, Hope Humphreys.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Philips Catholic Church.
