Donna Jean (Spicer) Duhamel, 83 of Bemidji died Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Gold Pine Home in Bemidji after an extended illness. Memorial Services will be 10:00 am Thursday, October 31, 2013 at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji, MN with Rev. Jay Borchert officiating. A visitation will be Wednesday, October 30, 2013 from 5-7 pm at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji. Condolences may be left at ceasefuneralhome.com. She was born August 21, 1930 in Minneapolis, MN and raised in Puposky, MN by her grandparents Thea and John Spicer. She was confirmed at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church and attended school in Puposky thru 8th grade. She graduated from Bemidji High School in 1949 (Go 49ers). She worked at Lake Julia Sanitarium until she married Leon "Lee" Duhamel September 2, 1950. She was active in the 4-H programs in Beltrami County; as a youngster she was a member of Puposky Pilots and was a Leader for her daughters 4-H club Aure Active Ants and Bemidji Better Builders. After her marriage she and Lee moved to Longview, WA and then to North Dakota and Montana where Lee worked construction. They returned to the Bemidji area in 1959. In 1968 she and the family moved to Gulfport, Mississippi when Lee returned to active military duty with the SeaBees. She was active with the military wives club. She worked to provide support and assistance to the 121 Battalions men when they returned from Vietnam. In 1975 she and her family returned to Bemidji. She worked for Beltrami County homemakers until 1980 when she began working at Beltrami Nursing Home as a CNA; working there for 12 years during which time she was active with the AFCME union holding a variety of offices. She was an active member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Unit #7; receiving awards and recognition for her work with the DAV. She was also an active member of the Pinewood American Legion Auxiliary. She planned a lot of weekend activities around the NASCAR races and bull riding competitions on TV for many years; she had a separate Christmas tree that was decorated with NASCAR ornaments. Family and friends knew not to call her between noon and 1:00 as Days of Our Lives was on. Family was very important to Donna. She is survived by her daughters Glenda Duhamel of Bemidji, MN and Barbara Duhamel of Loogootee, Indiana; sons Dwight (Deb) Duhamel of Bemidji, MN and Jermiey (Michelle) Duhamel of Shakopee, MN; 3 grandchildren Nikki, Krista and Jason; 2 great grandchildren Sophie and Tristan; sisters Joann (Bill) Markland of Longmont, CO and Sharon (Curtis) Thureen of East Grand Forks; sister-in-law Ellie Bohlmann of Bemidji, special friends Bee Barbour, Ralph Nyhus and Jack Stout and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Lee, biological mother Ella Thompson, brother Eugene Thompson, mother-in-law Alma Duhamel-St. Peter and father-in-law Harold Duhamel; grandparents and cousins.
