Donald Willard Olson

Donald Willard Olson, age 80, of Bemidji, MN, the patriarch of the Olson family was finally set free on Monday, August 18th, 2014 at Havenwood Care Center in Bemidji, MN.

A private family service will be held Saturday, August 23rd, 2014. People are welcome to come to the Olson residence after 2:00 p.m. on Saturday August 23rd to celebrate Donalds life with his family. Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji assisted with the arrangements.

He was born on August 20th, 1933 in Benson, MN the son of Elmer Olson and Deloris (Hart) Hunter.

He married Audrey Bouman in 1954 and they later divorced in 1961. He married Virginia Marken on September 16th, 1961 in Nashuwa, IA.

During his life, Donald worked at many places, including Fuller Bush Warehouse in Minneapolis, MN for 15 years. Most notably he was the owner and operator of the O & J caf in Milan, MN for 22 years, as well as being a school bus driver there. Donald was also a volunteer fire man 20 years. He retired in 1995 from Big Daddys caf in Hatton, ND to live at Virginias familys homestead in Bemidji, MN. He later worked at Kmart in Bemidji for 6 years, making many friends.

He was a member of the Becida Community Church. He was the 1st flagman at the Cedar Lake Speedway and a flagman at the Madison Speedway in Madison, MN.

Donald liked to work. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, deer hunting, camping in his motor home, feeding deer, and bird watching (especially eagles). He also loved dancing, singing his own versions of silly songs, reciting stories cribbage, bowling,clam digging in the Pacific Ocean, and sharing his cooking and baking. He adored his children and grandchildren and relished spending time with all his family.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia (Marken) Olson; sons, Jeff (Cindy) Olson, Randy Olson, Tim (Laurie) Olson, and Tom (Trisha) Olson; daughters, Donna (Richard) Hesselink, Tammy (Joe) Neubauer, and Tracey (Brent) Schroeder; brother, Kip (Bonnie) Olson; sister, Corrine Halloway; sisters-in-law, Lorraine Olson, and Judy Olson; his first wife, Audrey Compeau; 17 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and 1 great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Elmer (Helena) Olson and Deloris (Dean) Hunter; foster parents, Art and Elsa Price; brothers, Dean Olson and Dennis Olson; sister, Jane Johnson; and his special dogs, Sugar and Pepper.
