Donald F. Stokes, 91, of Greenville, Calif., formerly of Aure, died on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at the Oroville Hospital.
A funeral was held on March 21 at the First Lutheran Church in Greenville. Burial will be in Bemidji, at a later date.
He was born on March 25, 1918, to Clyde and Lollie Stokes in Central Butte, Saskatchewan, Canada. He spent his early years driving long haul trucks and working in the woods. He left Minnesota in 1940 to seek work in the West, as it was struggle to find work. He married Dolores Hill June 26, 1943, in Oakland, Calif., where he was employed at the naval station. He and Dolores moved back and forth between Washington, Minnesota and California. They moved to Greenville in 1947. He found work at numerous mills operating in the area. He retired in 1979, after 32 years in the lumber industry. He was involved with helping to organize the lumber and sawmill workers union. He was a devoted union member. He enjoyed being in the woods and coming home with a pickup full of wood. He enjoyed playing cards. He enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and several foreign countries and especially loved Yuma, Ariz.
The family requests any remembrances in his name be made to the First Lutheran Church in Greenville or the American Cancer Society.
