Dolores Lockhart

Former Cando and Egeland, N.D., resident Dolores C. Lockhart, 90, passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.

Dolores Cathryn Gau was born the oldest daughter of George and Molly (Fernholz) Gau on October 20, 1918, at Devils Lake, N.D. She grew up in the Egeland community, where she attended rural grade school and graduated from Egeland High School.

Dolores married her high school sweetheart, Albert Lockhart, on Dec. 10, 1940 at Cando and the couple had one daughter, Pamela. Dolores followed her husband to California during his time with the U.S. Navy. After the war, they returned to their hometown of Egeland, where Ab was hired to deliver the rural mail. They also owned and operated the local restaurant and grocery store. Later, Dolores sewed custom order draperies for a furniture store.

Ab and Dolores spent several winters in Apache Junction, Ariz., where they met many good friends from various states. In 1996, they sold their property in Arizona as well as their home in Egeland, and moved into Cando. Ab passed away in 1999. Dolores continued to live in Cando until July 2008, when she moved to Detroit Lakes to be near her daughter.

Dolores is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Myron) Dybing of Detroit Lakes; two granddaughters; three great grandchildren; her sisters-in-law, Lucy Gau and Ruth Pauls; her brother-in-law, Howard Lockhart; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, Ab, Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Harry and her sisters, Gloria and Joyce.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21 at Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home in Cando, with a 7 p.m. rosary and vigil service. There will also be visitation for one hour before services Monday at the church.

A mass of Christian burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cando, with the Rev. Joseph D'Aco officiating. Interment will follow services in the church cemetery.

Dunnigan-Dix Funeral Home of Cando is handling arrangements for the family.
