DIVING: Bemidji's Howard seventh after Thursday’s semifinal round

MINNEAPOLIS – Bemidji diver Sam Howard is in seventh place after Thursday’s preliminary and semifinal rounds of the state meet which is being held at the University of Minnesota’s pool.

Prior to the meet Howard’s goal was to place in the top eight after Saturday’s finals and his performance on Thursday placed the junior into prime position to achieve that goal.

In Thursday’s preliminary round Howard earned 146.65 points and was in ninth place.

He improved two spots by scoring 86.4 in the semifinals and his Thursday total of 233.05 is only four points out of sixth.

Joe McGrath of Hill-Murray leads the field with 283.15 while Mitch Raihle of Spring Lake Park is second with 268.55 and Tyler Jordahl of Mound-Westonka is a close third with 267.20.

Michael Aasness of Fergus Falls sits in fourth with 263.90 and Austin Ferris of Faribault completes the top five with 258.25.

Section 5A’s other representative, Reid Magnuson of Fergus Falls, ranks 12th heading into Saturday’s final with a score of 221.90.
