Diane Engel: The Volunteer Tax Preparation Program receives recognition
I would like to share with you a letter that came to the Senior Center from the Minnesota Department of Revenue, because I am so proud of my volunteers who do the Volunteer Tax Assistance Program.
“Bemidji Senior Center,
Congratulations on a successful and productive filing season!
This season was filled with unprecedented challenges. It was not an easy task this year with nonconformity and late tax law changes. We thank you for your patience, understanding, and commitment in helping Minnesota taxpayers receive free quality tax preparation.
We asked you to assist us in promoting direct deposit. Your hard work made the campaign a great success. Over 76 percent of refunds from free tax preparation sites were direct deposited. In addition, more than 75 percent of volunteer sites maintained or increased the percent of direct deposited refunds at their site from last year.Despite this season’s challenges, the volunteer program was more productive than ever. As of April 15, all volunteer sites combined filed nearly 143,000 M1 (Minnesota) and 1040 (Federal) returns, which is over 5,000 more than any prior year. The volunteer tax preparation program does a tremendous amount of good for our communities. The program could not have achieved the success it had this year without all the hard work and dedication shown by the volunteers at your site. From all of us at Minnesota Revenue, we’ve included a certificate recognizing the wonderful work your site did this year.On behalf of Minnesota Revenue, we would like to thank you again for your exceptional performance and devotion to the volunteer tax preparation program. We look forward to working with you next year.Sincerely,Minnesota Department of Revenue”The Senior Center would like to thank the Volunteers who make the Volunteer Tax Program a success each and every year.
