Dennis Michael Murphy, 59, of Bemidji, died Friday, Dec. 26, 2008, at Neilson Place in Bemidji.
The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home, in Bemidji with Rev. Christopher Conger officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Bemidji.
The pallbearers will be Steve Bratvold, Ricky Bratvold, Billy Tillman, Douglas Tillman, Greg Murphy and Randy Murphy.
He was born on April 4, 1949, to William and Agnes (Thompson) Murphy in Grand Forks, N.D. He grew up in Fisher, Minn., and graduated from Fisher High School in 1967. He graduated in 1973 from Brown College and pursued a career in radio announcing. He worked at KPRM in Park Rapids, Minn. In 1977, he married Kathy Jay in Staples, Minn. In 1978, he moved to Bemidji taking a position at KKBJ where he stayed for 17 years, eventually becoming program director until his retirement in 1995. He raised his family in Bemidji.
He is survived by his sons, Dennis Murphy of Bemidji, Randy Murphy of Tampa, Fla., Shawn (Lynda) Couch of Nevis, Minn., and Christian Couch of Park Rapids; daughter, Lacy (Edward) Higgins of Park Rapids; six grandchildren; ex-wife, Kathy Couch; brothers, William Murphy of Wichita, Kan., Raymond Murphy of Watertown, S.D., Ronald Murphy of Grand Forks, N.D., and Thomas (Joyce) Murphy of Grand Forks, N.D.; sisters, Dorothy (Morris) Gaines of Dennison, Texas and Margaret Tillman of Grand Forks, N.D.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, James Murphy.
