Dennis Hanks Sr., 60, of Bemidji, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji.
A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Philip's Catholic Church in Bemidji with the Rev. Tony Fernando officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday at Cease Family Funeral Home in Bemidji and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Lutheran Cemetery in Bemidji. Military honors will be provided by American Legion Post 14 of Bemidji.
He was born March 10, 1948, to Everett and Catherine (Reller) Hanks in Martinez, Calif. As an infant, he moved to International Falls where he attended St. Thomas School. After his mother's death when he was 14, he moved to Bemidji and lived with his brother-in-law and sister, Tom and Pat Hardwig. He graduated from Bemidji High School in 1966. In 1968, he served during the Vietnam War with the Seabees in Vietnam. In 1969, he was stationed in Gulfport, Miss., and was discharged in 1970. He married Sharon Geror Aug. 28, 1969, in Bemidji. In 1972, he started Hanks Masonry doing residential and commercial masonry work. In 2006, he retired due to ill health.
He was a member of the Forty & Eight of the American Legion and the Bricklayers Union.
He enjoyed hunting; fishing; spending time in Canada; cooking, especially Thanksgiving dinner; and spending quality time with his children and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Heidi (Rick) Osmundson of Bemidji and Kalsie (Tom) Vanasse of Bemidji; son, Dennis (Stephanie) Hanks Jr. of Bemidji; sister, Pat (Tom) Hardwig of Bemidji; brothers, Jim (Lana) Hanks of Cleveland, Ohio, Dick (Rose) Hanks of Oregon, Roger (Rhonda) Hanks of International Falls and Mike Hanks of Bemidji, and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Sharon and Darlene; and father-in-law.
