Delores May Knutson

Delores May (Whitmer) Knutson, 70, of Lake Itasca, Minnesota died on Thursday, January 10, 2013 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, January 14, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley, Minnesota with Reverend Steve McCaughan officiating. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 13, 2013 from 3-5:00 p.m. at the Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Bagley, Minnesota. Interment will be held at Pine Grove Cemetery at Lake Itasca, Minnesota. Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted with arrangements.

Delores was born June 13, 1942 to Mervil and Erma (Black) Whitmer in Buffalo, New York. Delores was the third of 5 children. She was raised by her grandmother Nora Sebring Rody. She was baptized, had her first communion and was confirmed at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Buffalo, New York. Delores attended school in Buffalo, New York.

Delores moved to California in 1966 where she met Milton Knutson. They were married in Reno, Nevada on August 10, 1968. They made their home in Long Beach, CA; Great Lakes, IL and moved to Lake Itasca, MN in 1976 and have lived there since.

Delores was a stay at home mom through the years Kim and Troy attended school. After their graduations, Delores worked at World of Christmas. She went to work for the University of Minnesota at the Itasca State Park Biological Station where she stayed until her retirement in 2008. She absolutely loved the people and the students at the Station. Many of the students did their bird studies at Milton and Delores’s home at Lake Itasca.

One of the greatest gifts Milton and Delores shared was the importance of family and community. They supported both and loved doing so. From the family reunions to the community events, they cherished each and every moment along with each and every person.

Delores is survived by her daughter Kim (Brian) Schlotfeldt, Moorhead, MN; son Troy (Lynn) Knutson, Longmont, CO; grandchildren; Ashley (Sean Deichert) Schlotfeldt, Tyler Schlotfeldt, Moorhead, MN, Brandon Knutson, Fort Collins, CO and Emily Knutson, Longmont, CO; aunt, Ruth Salter, Puyallup, WA; sister; Bonnie Roneker of Depew, NY; brothers-in-law, Edwin (Florine) Knutson, Lake Park, MN, Clayton (June) Knutson, Concord, CA; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Steffan, Collumbus, NM, Elaine (Jesse) Laing, Corpis Cristi, TX, Connie (Alex) Kossick, Audubon, MN; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Milton; father, Mervil; mother, Erma; brother, Jack Whitmer; sisters, Edith Whitmer and Karen Mrugalski.
