Defensive lapses costly for Bemidji

Crookston outscored the Bemidji girls basketball team 8-2 in overtime to down the Lumberjacks 61-55 Tuesday in Crookston but BHS coach Rick Kehoe could trace the loss to a lack of defense in the first half.

"We were better in the second half but in the first half we played very poorly on defense," Kehoe said. "We're out of synch right now. All night long we were a step behind and that step cost us."

Crookston took advantage of Bemidji's defensive problems to open a 33-29 lead at intermission.

"You can't give up 33 points in a half and expect to win," the coach said.

Kehoe was limited in his lineup options as well as Caitlin Hadrava was not available after spraining her foot Friday against Duluth East. It is hoped that Hadrava can return Friday at Brainerd.

"We were playing with six girls and it seemed that Crookston always had fresh players on the court," Kehoe said.

Early in the second half Jess Yost was whistled for her fourth personal foul and Bemidji's main weapon was forced to spend time on the bench.

"When Jess had to sit it really hurt us not to have Caitlin," Kehoe said.

Cheyenne Woods made two free throws with 17 seconds to tie the game 53-53 and neither team scored during the rest of regulation.

The Jacks opened the overtime with a basket but never scored again.

Bemidji, 9-6, visits Brainerd Friday and hosts Rogers 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
