The Lester Lake Scientific and Natural Area and Aquatic Management Area in Hubbard County surrounds a 70-acre undeveloped site.

The SNA/AMA collaboration will be celebrated from noon to 2 p.m. by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Kabekona Lake Foundation, Kabekona Lake Association and The Trust for Public Land.

The event will be at the Lester Lake site on South Kabekona Lake Road.

A dedication ceremony will include lunch provided by the Kabekona Lake Foundation, feature several speakers from the DNR and project partners, and provide participants with an opportunity to tour the site.

"This is a great chance for the public to explore the unique features of the area," said Katie Haws, Midwest Glacial Lakes Project Manager. "I encourage anyone interested in learning about the benefits of our state SNAs and AMAs to join us for the event."

Lester Lake SNA/AMA is part of the once contiguous forest of mixed hardwoods and pines and lowland forested swamps on the rolling hills of the Itasca Moraine.

The property was purchased with funds dedicated to environmental projects. The majority of the $1.45 million in funding came from the 2008 Clean Water, Land and Legacy Amendment Act - specifically the Outdoor Heritage Fund through a grant from the Lessard-Sams Outdoor Heritage Council and the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, as recommended by the Legislative Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).

Additional funding was provided through bonding money and Reinvest in Minnesota funds matched by private donations from the Kabekona Lake Foundation.

The Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit land organization, partnered with the DNR to transfer the land to public ownership.
