Dayton public works projects present varied picture

ST. PAUL -- Some projects Gov. Mark Dayton included in his proposal to fund public works projects:

-- $6.6 million to replace tunnel under University Avenue between Capitol and parking lots.

-- $21 million for emergency repairs to Capitol and Centennial Office Building.

-- $33 million for low-interest loans to farmers.

-- $25 million for low-income housing purchase and rehabilitation.

-- $40 million to improve security at St. Peter Security Hospital, where sex offenders are housed.

-- $3.6 million for pipeline to move water from Lake Superior up the Popular River Valley for several uses, including making snow at Lutsen Mountains resort; local governments to contribute $1.2 million.

-- $737,000 to upgrade the Northeast Regional Correction Center; local governments would pay the same.

-- $27 million to build a St. Paul baseball park for Saints professional team and other teams from around the state.

-- $4.8 million for center to replace Wadena aquatics, gymnasium and other facilities destroyed by tornado; local governments would pay $4.5 million.

-- $20 million to build flood-prevention structures; local governments would pay $5 million.

-- $12 million to fight invasive Asian carp; federal government would pay $2 million.

-- $17 million to clean up public water supplies; federal government would pay $85.4 million.

-- $25 million for sewage treatment improvements; other governments would pay $23 million.

-- $26 million to build a new state emergency operations center in Arden Hills.

-- $20 million each for University of Minnesota and Minnesota State Colleges and Universities for general repairs.

-- $13.9 million to remodel Ridgewater college space in Willmar for agriculture and veterinary technology programs and other uses.

-- $4.6 million to renovate Minnesota West Community and Technical College field house in Worthington.

-- $25 million for local bridge replacements; federal government would pay $50 million.

-- $10 million for greater Minnesota transit improvements; local governments would pay $3.3 million.

-- $81 million to renovate University of Minnesota Twin Cities steam heating plant.

-- $6 million to construct a student center and do other work at University of Minnesota facility at Itasca State Park.
