Dayton plans hip surgery

ST. PAUL — Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton plans to have surgery on a hip that has been giving him trouble for months.

The governor announced Tuesday his surgery will be at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Feb 6. It is expected to take about an hour, and he will wear a brace for up to three months.

He underwent an earlier procedure, short of surgery, but it did not fix the problem that began when he slipped on his stairway.

“I have the utmost confidence in the medical professionals at Mayo and am confident that this surgery will ensure greater mobility,” Dayton said. “I want to assure Minnesotans that there is nothing about this procedure that will affect my capacity to fulfill my duties as governor or outweigh my passion for serving the people of Minnesota.”

The Democrat said the surgery will not slow him down, and that he looks forward “to a full recovery and aggressively seeking re-election this fall.”

A Mayo team is to begin surgery at 7 a.m., and Dayton will be under general anesthesia. The procedure will reattach the major hip tendons to the bone around the hip joint.

Dayton’s office reported several tests revealed those tendons have become detached from the bone.

Doctors told Dayton he will wear a brace for up to three months after surgery to immobilize the hip area. The office indicates Dayton may travel less because of the brace, but he will be able to carry out his duties.
