Dayton appoints Treuer to MN State Arts Board

Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton has appointed Bemidji State University Professor Anton Treuer to the Minnesota State Arts Board.

The Minnesota State Arts Board is a state agency that stimulates and encourages the creation, performance and appreciation of the arts in the state.

The organization has a budget of nearly $40 million, the majority of which is expended on a series of public grant programs.

Treuer is Professor of Ojibwe at Bemidji State University. He holds a bachelor's degree from Princeton University, and both a master's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota.

He is editor of the Oshkaabewis Native Journal, the only academic journal of the Ojibwe language, and author of eight books.

Treuer has served on many organizational boards, including the White Earth Land Recovery Project and Sanford/MeritCare Health System.

He has received more than 40 awards and fellowships from many organizations, including the Sally Ordway Irvine Center for the Performing Arts, American Philosophical Society, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Science Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, Bush Foundation and the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation.
