Darwin Melvin Troy, 79, of Northome, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009, at Northome Healthcare Center.

The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in Northome with Rev. Roy Johnson officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church Monday. Burial will be in the spring at Forest Hill Cemetery in Northome under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck.

Active pallbearers will be grandsons, Ryan Olson, Robert J. Troy, Scott Walker, David Troy, Jason Bradenburg and great-grandson, Cody Troy.

Honorary pallbearers will be his other grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was born Jan. 5, 1930, to James Lowell and Irene (Krebs) Troy in Osseo, Minn. He attended the Osseo School. He lost his mother at an early age and was raised the majority of his young life by his father and his step-mother Avis (Elliot) Troy. He married Lorraine Doris Hagen March 31, 1948. The couple lived in Northeast Minneapolis and raised five children. He worked for the Siwek Lumber Company for many years. In the mid 1960s, the family moved to Northome where he worked with his father on the farm and in their saw mill. He worked as a carpenter while he and his wife ran the Sportsman's Café on Main Street, Northome. In the later years, he owned a small business hauling garbage for people in the community. He retired from Koochiching County as a solid waste transfer station attendant, a position he held for many years. He also served on the Northome City Council. He enjoyed spending time at Red Lake with his wife, camping, fishing and visiting with the area people.

He is survived his wife of 61 years of Northome; children Geri (Red) Walker of Northome, James L. (Rena) Troy of Northome, Ray (Fawn) Troy of Thief River Falls, Sharon (Brian) Olson of Thief River Falls and Susan (James) Jankowsky; 13 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren; brothers, Byron (Jerri) Troy of Blaine and Robert D. (Miriam) Troy of East Wareham, Mass.; sister, Arlene (William) Hartos of Columbia Heights, Minn.; step-sister, Lorrayne (Ben) Sieckert of Virginia, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother; a brother, Russel Troy; and a grandson.
