Darlene Nygaard, 77, of Bemidji, died Friday, February 22, 2013 at the home of her son, Bill Nygaard.

A memorial services will be held 1:30, Thursday, February 28, 2013 at First Lutheran Church, Bemidji, MN, with Pastor Corey Fuhrman officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:30 at the church. Inurnment will be in the spring at Greenwood Cemetery, Bemidji.

Honorary urn bearers are Marge Shofner, Sally Ellingson, Ike Floura, Phyllis Wilcox, and Mary Dufault.

Darlene Annette Pederson was born July 14, 1935 in Gonvick, MN, to Helmer and Margaret (Torgerson) Pederson. She was baptized and confirmed at Samhold Lutheran Church in Gonvick. She graduated from Gonvick High School in 1953. Her first job out of high school was as an operator for Bell Telephone Company in Minneapolis. She married Marcus (Mike) Nygaard on December 5, 1953. They made their first home in a small travel trailer, following road construction all around northern Minnesota. The family settled in Bemidji in 1960.

Darlene worked at Bookcraft in downtown Bemidji, from the first day it opened until the store became the Beaver Bookstore on the Bemidji State College campus. Then, she worked as a bank teller at First Federal Savings and Loan. She served as den mother to her sons’ Cub Scout troops, and was warmly remembered and often greeted by her former scouts. She was a member of the Minnesota Women’s Bowling Association Tournament championship team in 1975. She and her bowling friends formed a sisterhood that reached far beyond the walls of Bemidji Bowl. In her later years, she and her husband enjoyed several ocean cruises and wintering in Casa Grande, AZ.

She is survived by her daughter, Jody (Gary) Bergsven, sons Mike (Patty) Nygaard, Don (Annie) Nygaard, Bill (Teri) Nygaard, 7 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, sister, Beverly Harris, brothers, Leslie Pederson and Richard (Cherie) Pederson and brother-in-law, Sidney Norsteun.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mike Nygaard, and 2 sisters, Gloria Norsteun and Delores Johnson.
