An evening of watching the best of Bemidji's dance teams perform may be just the cure for cabin fever this winter.
Bemidji High School will host the Blue Angels' Dance Show 2010 at 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 6, at the BHS Main Gym. Tickets are $6 for adults; $4 for students; and children 5 years old and under are admitted free.
The dance event marks the end of the BHS Blue Angels' competitive dance season. On Jan. 30, the varsity team competed in the Section 3AAA meet in Alexandria with a 10th-place finish in the jazz category and a 13th-place in the high kick category.
"It seemed to all come together," Blue Angels' head coach Amy Merschman said of the sectional competition. "We made some changes from the beginning of the season for the better. They pulled everything together and showed the hard work paid off."
The show also features dance groups from Bemidji State University, Just for Kix, First City Dance Studio, Suzy and Hondo's Dance Studio and Fusion Dance Center. The dance event is a main fundraiser for the Bemidji dance teams, which need funding for buses and hotels for regional competitions.
This season's 16-member varsity Blue Angels team consisted of one junior, two sophomores and 13 freshmen.
"This puts into perspective how young of a team we have," Merschman said. "We are very happy just having improvement in the season. I enjoyed watching them grow as dancers. I'm so proud of the girls and what they've accomplished."
Besides its two competitive dances, the BHS dance teams will perform a father-daughter dance, a guy-girl routine and a hip-hop dance selection.
Dance show goers should stick around for the end, as both varsity and junior varsity dance teams perform a glow-stick routine in the dark.
"I've enjoyed seeing the smiles on their faces and how much fun they're having," said Barb Treat," vice president of the BHS Blue Angels dance team booster club. "It's really been heart-warming to see them grow."
The booster club is in charge of the team's fundraising efforts and publicity.
Pre-sale tickets are encouraged and available at Overbeek Electronics, First City Dance Studio or at the door.
