Former Garfield, Minn., resident Dale E. "Dutch" Gillespie, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, October 7 at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.

Dale was born to Jim and Etta (Staines) Gillespie on July 31, 1921 in Harris, Iowa. In 1927, the family moved to the Chokio, Minn., area, where Dutch attended school. He also attended the University of Minnesota Agriculture College in Morris, Minn., and Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for welding.

Dutch entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and was stationed at Fort Sam Houston in Texas. After his release from the army, he married Joyce Anderson. The couple had six children: Frank, Delbert, Verl, Darrell, Glenda and Linda. Dutch and his family farmed near Chokio until 1969, when they relocated to Garfield. Dutch and Joyce operated a liquor/restaurant business in Garfield. From 2006 until the present, Dutch had resided at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.

Dutch was a member of the American Legion, Disabled American Vets, and Eagles Club. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, traveling, reading and playing cards. He loved to visit with friends at the nursing home, and was determined to win at bingo.

Surviving Dutch are his six children, Frank Gillespie of Detroit Lakes, Delbert Gillespie of Alexandria, Minn., Verl Gillespie of Ortonville, Minn., Darrell Gillespie of Dalton, Minn., Glenda Stokes of Alexandria, Minn., and Linda Fahlin of Garfield; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one sister, Edna Walker of Baldwin, Wis.

Dutch was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Art, Don, Gordon, Ernest and Leonard; and three sisters, Sadie Rasmusen, Vera Kraayenbrink and Ina Gillespie.
