ST. JOHN, New Brunswick — The Allison Pottinger rink opened the World Women’s Curling Championships with three victories but the team, which includes Bemidji curler Natalie Nicholson, dropped a pair of decisions Monday, 8-5 to Sweden and 9-3 to Canada and fell to 3-2.

Pottinger began the tournament with a 12-5 victory over China and on Sunday the team nipped Germany 6-5 and battered Denmark 13-2.

In Monday’s draw the USA and Sweden were tied 5-5 after USA scored a single in the eighth end but Sweden used the hammer to tally two in the ninth and iced the victory with a steal in the 10th.

Needing to score at least a deuce in the final end, USA advanced a rock into the eight-foot behind a guard but couldn’t protect it. With her last rock Pottinger had a tough double takeout and needed to keep the shooter in play to try to score two but, although she made contact, Pottinger didn’t move Sweden’s rocks far enough to prevent the steal.

Pottinger trailed 2-1 early on to Canada, but the Rachel Homan rink from Canada earned four in the fourth to open the margin up to 6-1.

Heading into today’s action, Switzerland sits atop the standings at 5-0, while Canada and Sweden are both 4-1.
