Curling: Fenson tops Denmark but will not make page playoffs
BEIJING, China -- The Pete Fenson rink will close its round robin schedule at the 2014 World Men’s Curling Championships with Wednesday’s late game against Norway and Thursday’s early-morning contest against Switzerland.
Fenson and his Team USA teammates took a 3-6 record into ithe final two games and was not in contention for the page playoffs which begin Friday. Norway owned an 8-1 record prior to its game against Team USA and already qualified for the playoffs. Japan also was in solid position to gain the playoffs as it had a 7-2 record after nine games. Canada and Switzerland were 6-3 while China and Sweden stood at 5-4.
Germany and the Czech Republic had 4-5 records while Scotland joined Team USA at 3-6. Trailing the leaders were Denmark at 2-7 and Russia at 1-8.
In Wednesday’s action Fenson lost 8-4 to China but bounced back to spill Denmark 6-5 in 11 ends.
Denmark bolted to a 3-0 lead with a pair in the first end and a steal in the third. Fenson scored one in the fifth and stole another in the sixth to draw within 3-2 and, after each team added one more point, Denmark owned a 4-3 advantage until Fenson scored a pair in the ninth.
Denmark used the hammer to tie the game with one in the 10th but Team USA notched the game-winner in the 11th end when Fenson converted a takeout shot.
