CURLING: Fenson, Pottinger rinks in playoff hunt
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Pete Fenson rink rallied from a 9-8, 11 end loss to Mike Farbelow in Monday’s late draw to edge Ryan Lemke 7-5 Tuesday and stay in the hunt for a spot on the USA Men’s National Curling Championships Page Playoffs.
The Fenson rink, which includes Bemidji curlers Pete Fenson, Joe Polo and Ryan Brunt plus Shawn Rojeski of Chisholm, is in a four-way tie for second place in the round-robin standings with a 4-2 record.
Brady Clark of Washington leads the field at 5-1 while Fenson, Heath McCormick of New York, Tyler George of Duluth and John Shuster of Duluth all stand at 4-2.
Owning 3-3 records are Mike Farbelow of Minneapolis and Craig Brown of Wisconsin while Greg Persinger of Alaska is 2-5, Todd Birr of Mankato is 1-5 and Ryan Lemke of Wisconsin is 0-6.
The men have two draws today. In the morning round Fenson will face McCormick and in the afternoon session the Bemidji rink will match shots with Birr.
The Allison Pottinger rink of Eden Prairie, which includes Bemidji curler Natalie Nicholson, split two games on Tuesday. In the morning round Pottinger blitzed Cristin Clark of Washington 11-2 but in the evening session it fell 8-7 to Erika Brown of Wisconsin.
Those results dropped Pottinger into a two-way tie for second, along with Brown, with a 5-2 record. Courtney George of Duluth leads the field at 6-1.
The other women’s team with Bemidji ties is the Laura Roessler rink of Wisconsin and Tuesday the team, which includes Bemidji curler Jamie Haskell, dropped both of its games, losing 4-3 to Patti Lank of New York and 7-5 to Sarah Anderson of Pennsylvania.
Roessler will enter today’s action with a 2-5 record.
Today’s schedule sees Roessler facing Becca Hamilton of Wisconsin and Lank. Pottinger will battle Alex Carlson of Minnesota and George.
