CROSS COUNTRY: Bemidji girls win Alexandria Meet of Champions
ALEXANDRIA — Bemidji’s first team victory in the Alexandria Meet of Champions since 1986 was another special one.
The Lumberjacks’ girls team scored 124 points to beat out second-place Mounds View and win the team title Saturday at Arrowwood Resort.
Also Saturday Sam Carlson was the boys’ champion and helped the Lumberjacks’ boys team take third out of 20 teams.
“It was a great day for both teams,” BHS head coach Ryan Aylesworth said.
The BHS girls were led by Jenna Truedson, who took third place with a time of 14 minutes, 23 seconds.
Alexandria’s Megan Hasz paced the field with a time if 13:59.
Tuedson was Bemidji’s only runner in the top 10 but Sadie Hamrin placed 19th at 15:29 and Megan Serratore took 26th at 15:41. Atomic Thorson and Arie Gislason rounded out BHS’s top five runners placing 29th and 47th, respectively.
“We’re very happy with that performance today,” Aylesworth said. “I’m proud and impressed by the way the girls ran. It was a great team effort.”
For the boys, Carlson took first place with a time of 16:14 to help pace the Lumberjacks.
Stillwater took first with 68 points and Mounds View second with 109 but Bemidji was right behind with 127 points.
Caleb Appelton (17th) and Billy Freyholtz (20th) were also in the top 20, with times of 17:10 and 17:15, respectively.
“It was a nice win for Sam in a big invitational,” Aylesworth said. “And it was solid for the rest of the team, too. We have a few things to work on as a team but I’m pleased with the performance.”
The Lumberjacks are off next week before their home invitational Oct. 15.
