ST. PAUL— Commercial drivers in Minnesota can expect stricter enforcement of seat belts, driver roadside inspections and regulatory compliance next week.

The Minnesota State Patrol Commercial Vehicle Section will be increasing traffic enforcement statewide Sunday through Oct. 26.

Noncommercial motorists can expect an increase in enforcement of safe driving conduct near commercial vehicles.

The initiative is part of a nationwide effort to promote safety awareness among commercial and passenger vehicle drivers.

Last year in Minnesota, there were 3,789 crashes involving commercial trucks, resulting in 1,178 injuries and 56 deaths.

Minnesota State Patrol urges motorists driving around big trucks to stay visible to the trucks’ drivers, obey speed limits and allow plenty of room between their vehicles and the trucks.

The patrol also reminds motorists that seat belts are the single most important thing to save your life in a crash.
