BEMIDJI – At first, Derek Kringen was upset about the obvious errors on the coupon for his bar, Lazy Jack’s.
The coupon, which was mailed to area residents, offers 1.5 pounds of wings and a “picture” of beer for $10. Not only that, but the number listed on the coupon wasn’t for the bar, but the cook’s personal phone.
But Monday brought the kind of advertising you can’t buy.
“Here’s what you get, a picture of beer,” said “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno, holding up a photo of a pitcher of beer Monday during his weekly segment poking fun at unfortunate newspaper headlines from across the country.
But Lazy Jack’s was way ahead of the comedian on that gag.
The crew decided to have fun with the error after it was made last fall, printing off photos of beer and giving them to people who tried to the use the coupon. Many didn’t get the joke, said Kringen, the bar’s owner and operator.
He hasn’t seen a coupon for months, and the joke photos were discarded.
“And then all of a sudden we’re on Jay Leno,” he said. Kringen plans on sending a picture of the infamous coupon to Leno for an autograph to hang in the bar.
Since Monday, Kringen can’t escape the coupon. His phone has been going off constantly with calls and Facebook messages, and people are stopping him at the grocery store and the bank.
Kringen said he agreed to be included on a flyer of ads and coupons for about $100. He figured the distributor was offering a good bargain for a wide area of advertising.
But there was only one problem: They never got to proofread it.
Soon, the cook was getting calls on his phone intended for Lazy Jack’s, and his friends were making fun of the error.
“In all honesty right away, I was pretty mad,” Kringen said. “I was like, ‘I’m not paying for this’”
But national exposure might have softened his stance.
“Originally I was going to be mad at him, but now I’m probably going to give him a hug,” Kringen said with a laugh.
