Corner kicks spark Beavers to 3-0 soccer win

The Bemidji State University women's soccer team picked-up its fourth win and second straight shutout Saturday, blanking the Minnesota State-Moorhead Dragons 3-0 at the BSU Soccer Complex.

Two of the Beavers' goals came off corner kicks.

In the 21st minute, Kara Smyth took the first corner kick of the game for the Beavers. Smyth delivered a low ball to the near post that found the foot of fellow senior Alysha Domiano, who chipped the ball into the top corner of the net to give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.

Moorhead put some pressure on after halftime, forcing Beavers goalkeeper Abby Kjonaas to make a save just 38 seconds into the half. The Dragons kept pressing, but were called offside on the ensuing attack.

But the Beavers responded and increased their lead in the 62nd minute. On a MSUM throw-in, Samantha Lumberg intercepted the ball in the BSU defensive third of the field and got it to Ashlee Ellefsen, who tapped it past the MSUM keeper who was charging out to intercept the pass. Ellefsen finished by making a sliding kick from a sharp angle to put the ball in the back of the net, scoring her third goal of the season.

The Beavers squashed any hope of a Dragon comeback in the 79th minute when they scored their third goal of the game. Lining up to take a corner kick, Ellefsen put the ball up high at the near post. Tiffany VanHaaften went up for the header and put the ball past the keeper to score her first goal of the season.

Kjonaas is now 2-0-0 on the season and picked up her first shutout of the season. She turned away eight shots on goal en route to her third-career shutout.

Picking up her first assist on the season, Ellefsen inches closer to taking over another career record at BSU. She now has 17 career assists and only needs six more to claim the top spot.

With the win Bemidji State has posted victories in nine of the past 11 meetings against MSUM.

The Beavers return to the pitch at 1 p.m. Sunday when they host Minnesota-Crookston.
