Conklin, McDonald attend CLV immersion program
Li Conklin has participated in the Concordia Language Villages summer program by attending a two-week youth immersion session at Sēn Lín Hú, the Chinese Language Village, located near Callaway. Conklin is the son of Paul Conklin and Becky Marty, Solway, and will be a ninth-grader at Trek North High School in Bemidji this fall.
Ben McDonald participated in the program by attending a two-week session at Mori no Ike, the Japanese Language Village, located near Dent. McDonald is the son of Kelly and Naomi McDonald of Bemidji and will be a sophomore at Bemidji High School this fall. This is Ben's sixth year attending the program.
By attending the villages, Conklin and McDonald experienced a simulated visit to another country. They were issued passports, exchanged currency and adopted new names.
By interacting with staff from all over the world, they also learned about the many opportunities available to those who speak more than one language. Conklin and McDonald were immersed in the language and culture of another country through large and small learning groups, authentic foods, holiday celebrations, re-enactments of historic events, songs, dances, crafts, games and everyday conversations.
