Community invited to support Vocalmotive; BHS show choir headed to National finals
BEMIDJI – The public is invited to take part in coming events to celebrate the achievements of the Bemidji High School show choir and to support its 71 Vocalmotive students as they prepare to travel to Chicago.
Vocalmotive last month won first place in the Show Choir National Championship Series in Chicago, earning them a spot in National finals, to also be hosted in Chicago.
They leave April 25 to compete that weekend at the Arie Crown Theater against 16 other schools.
“I think the kids will really step it up,” said Chris Fettig, choir director. “It will be, obviously, the toughest competition we’ve ever been at, but I think the show and the team are amazing.
“If we can put together our best show, I think we’ll do pretty well.”
Several events are set for the coming days as Vocalmotive prepares National finals.
First, a spaghetti dinner fundraiser, sponsored by Grimes Realty, will be at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the National Guard Armory, 1430 23rd St. NW. Tickets are $7 a person or four for $25.
“The kids will be performing solos and ensemble songs,” Fettig said. “They will be providing the entertainment.”
Then, as a thank you to the community, Vocalmotive is opening its Monday evening dress rehearsal to the public at the BHS auditorium. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a 6:30 p.m. show. The event is free, though donations will be accepted.
“This performance on Monday will kick off our final rehearsals,” Fettig said.
A third event will be Tuesday as five Bemidji State University music professors and instructors – known as the MIDiots – will perform at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Thompson Recital Hall in Bemidji State’s Bangsberg Fine Arts Complex.
The performance is free but the MIDIots will accept donations to go toward Vocalmotive’s expenses.
After qualifying for the national finals, Fettig said Vocalmotive would seek $10,000 for transportation and lodging needs.
“It’s been amazing,” he said Friday of the community support that has been generated. “It’s really amazing.”
