If the University of Nebraska-Omaha jumps to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, it would leave open a spot in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.

Alabama-Huntsville, who will be without a conference after the 2009-10 season, is hoping to join. Huntsville applied for membership in late January and CCHA officials made a site visit earlier this month.

The CCHA is expected to vote on Huntsville during August's meetings.

The WCHA, which currently is negotiating possible membership terms with Nebraska-Omaha, hopes to know by then whether the Mavericks will apply for membership along with Bemidji State.

"We know that there is no guarantee on our future," Huntsville coach Danton Cole said, "regardless of what transpires with other institutions over the summer. That being said, the university and our community are very proud of what we presented and what we have to offer the CCHA and college hockey."

The Grand Forks Herald and Bemidji Pioneer are both owned by Forum Communications Co.
