Colleen Joyce Balsiger

Colleen Joyce Balsiger, 85, of Blackduck, Minnesota, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center in Bemidji, Minnesota after a brief illness. Colleen was born on March 2, 1927, in Kelliher, Minnesota, the daughter of Roy and Helen (Mudica) Anderson. She was raised on the family farm near Kelliher where she graduated from high school. As a young lady she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. She worked for a while at Honeywell. On August 26, 1950, Colleen was united in marriage to William "Bill" Balsiger in Minneapolis. The couple moved to Blackduck in 1975. Together they owned the Drake Motel. They also started Blackduck Reality and the Paul Bunyan and Blackduck Shopper, where she was a typesetter. Later Colleen worked for her son Scott in his printing business. She was an incredible seamstress, and made Barbie doll clothes as well many other items. Colleen enjoyed traveling and was proud to have been in Berlin when the "wall" came down. She enjoyed golfing, fishing, bowling and in her later years playing scrabble at the senior center. Colleen will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who shared in her life.

Loving family members include her children, Becky Parkin of Bemidji, MN, Kris (Gene) Ranieri of St. Paul, MN, and Scott (Denise) Balsiger of Tucson, AZ; 13 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; brothers, Roland (Luverne) Anderson of Shotley, MN, and Donald (Lenore) Anderson of Blackduck, MN; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives. Colleen was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; parents; and her sister, Shirley Beccue.

Funeral Services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 26, 2012 at the Zion Lutheran Church of Blackduck with the Rev. Dan Heath, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the Lakeview Cemetery, Blackduck, Minnesota under the direction of Cease Family Funeral Home of Blackduck.
