Free throw shooting failed the Bemidji State men's basketball team Saturday in a 69-67 loss to Augustana at the BSU Gymasium.

"It is very simple to sum it up," said Beavers coach Matt Bowen. "All you have to do is look at the free throw line. We are a team that has shot at least 75 percent in the last two years, tonight we shot 59. That is the ballgame right there."

The Beavers, 6-6 overall and 3-5 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, featured an efficient offensive attack in the first half. They made four 3-pointers and committed only six turnovers in forging a 35-32 lead.

But the visitors went on a 21-9 run in the first nine minutes of the second half to take a 53-44 lead and never gave it up.

"Bottom line is that we just missed some shots," said Bowen. "They were shots that, characteristically, we do not typically miss. Because of that, we came up two points short."

Augustana still held a 10-point lead with five minutes remaining in the game.

After a made shot by junior James Ellisor, Bemidji State cut the Augustana lead to three with 43 seconds left.

After a blocked shot, Lance Rongstad's 3-point attempt to tie the game came up short, as did the Beaver comeback.

Junior guard Jake Lindstrom led the Beavers with 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Ellisor added 14 points. Sophomore forward Mason Walters and junior guard Bryce Tesdahl had 11 points each.

"We hung in there and battled back," Bowen said. "We made some very good defensive stops and made a few plays offensively, which allowed us to get back into the game. We showed a tremendous amount of resiliency and in the end, we will be on the winning side of one of these."

Bemidji State will return to action today when it hosts Wayne State at 4 p.m.
