Coast Guard crewman sentenced for sexual assault

DULUTH — A former crewman on the Coast Guard Cutter Alder stationed in Duluth was sentenced Tuesday to 10 years of military prison and will receive a bad-conduct discharge from the service.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Matthew A. Rogers was convicted Monday of sexually assaulting a civilian woman in Portsmouth, Va., on Aug. 15, 2012. He also was found guilty of violating several other articles of military law related to the case.

At the time he was assigned to the Coast Guard Cutter Alder, a 225-foot seagoing buoy tender based in Duluth, where he had been stationed since March 2012. He was attending training in Portsmouth at the time of the sexual assault.

Rogers originally is from Phoenix.
