Coalition starts campaign to curb underage drinking
The Drug Free Coalition of North Central Minnesota has completed the design stage of an underage drinking social marketing campaign aimed to curb underage alcohol use in the region.
A competition was launched in February encouraging after school youth programs to design a campaign which delivered a message to youth, ages 10-14, that living alcohol free is the best way to be. Design categories included creating a poster, T-shirt and a video or public service announcement.
The Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area won the first place award for their "Rise Above" T-shirt and poster design.
The Red Lake NationBoys & Girls Club won the first place award for their "Don't Be a Freak. Just Don't Drink!" video, which can be viewed at www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGXzea6UIis.
The second place recipients were White Earth's Waubun AlaTeen for their "Stinken' Thinking Leads to Drinking-Be Smart-Don't Start" poster and a T-shirt designed by the Red Lake Nation Boys & Girls Club.
Third place was awarded to Leech Lake Youth Program "Put no drinking in your Thinking!" T-shirt design.
The Drug Free Coalition of North Central Minnesota presented the winners with a donation to support their youth program initiatives. In addition, the first- and second-place posters and T-shirts are being duplicated to distribute throughout the region prior to prom and graduation events.
The coalition received a grant from North Country Health Services Foundation in 2008 to support the underage drinking social marketing campaign.
