The Bemidji baseball team finished the year 13-9 and, considering the makeup of the team, coach Mike Fogelson was pleased with the season's results.

"Of course we wanted to extend the season all the way to the state tournament but I'm very happy with the way the kids played," Fogelson said. "We had mostly younger kids in the lineup and, rightfully so, they received a ton of playing time which helped them develop."

The Lumberjacks will lose three seniors who saw extended playing time, Matt Hietala, Josh Kane and Paul Voss. Also graduating are Chad Head and Luke Burns.

"We return seven starters and that gives us a solid nucleus for next year," Fogelson said.

Fogelson stresses pitching and defense and the Jacks were efficient in both categories this spring.

"Looking at the statistics you can see that our pitching was solid and defensively we averaged about one error per game and that's very good at the high school level.

"Offensively we were strong most of the year but we did have a 10-day stretch where our bats struggled," Fogelson added.

Tyler Follis finished with a .395 average to lead the attack and Cody Rutledge wasn't far behind at .375. Also hitting over .300 were Tyler Tatro who finished at .333 and Collin Leif at .309.

Follis also was the team leader in at-bats (76), runs (18), hits (30), total bases (41) and doubles (eight). Rutledge's 20 RBI was the high-water mark for Bemidji.

Cole Bardwell, who was the team's designated runner, led the Jacks in stolen bases (14) and tied Follis in runs scored (18).

Ryan Stevens was the top pitcher as the junior went 5-0 in 34.1 innings. He struck out 48, walked 16 and opposing hitters managed only a .211 batting average.

Zach Solheim posted a 3-3 record in 30.1 innings and Follis finished 2-1 in 27.2 innings. Matt Schneider ended 1-2 in 20.1 innings, Kane 1-1 in 12 innings and Rutledge 1-1 in 11 innings.
