Click It Or Ticket campaign cites 44 motorists
Beltrami County deputies and Bemidji Police officers cited 44 unbelted motorists during a statewide Department of Public Safety Safe & Sober - Click It Or Ticket enforcement effort May 18-31.
Special night patrols were also conducted during the campaign to combat a growing concern of unbelted traffic deaths during night hours. Department of Public Safety reports show that 61 percent of nighttime fatal crash victims were not wearing seat belts.
In the last three years in Beltrami County, 12 motorists died, seven of whom were unbelted, and another 17 were seriously injured. The estimated economic impact of unbelted deaths and serious injuries in Beltrami County during 2006-2008 was $16, 392,000.
Department of Public safety reports 518 vehicle occupants killed and 1,151 vehicle occupants seriously injured in crashes were not wearing seat belts, and that half of those killed would have survived if they were buckled up.
Click It Or Ticket enforcement efforts is a component of Minnesota's Toward Zero Deaths initiative, a multi-agency approach to address traffic issues regionally through enforcement, education, engineering and emergency trauma care.
