Clearbrook-Gonvick advances in 8A East but Red Lake falls

THIEF RIVER FALLS – Fosston neutralized Red Lake’s fast-moving offense Saturday and ended the Warriors’ season with a 67-46 victory in the East Sub-Section 8A girls semifinals at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.

In Saturday’s other sub-section contest top-seeded Clearbrook-Gonvick dominated No. 5 Mahnomen 51-29.

In Tuesday’s sub-section final at the REA Clearbrook-Gonvick will face No. 3 Fosston at 6 p.m. Tuesday’s late game at the REA will match the two West sub-section finalists.

Red Lake entered Saturday’s game seeded second in the East while Fosston was the third seed.

Fosston, however, took control in the opening half as the Greyhounds stormed to a 36-14 lead at the break. Red Lake outscored Fosston 32-31 in the second half but the damaged had already been done.

Averi Holthusen scored 23 points to lead the Warriors while Grace White had 11.

Balance spurred C-G to its semifinal win as eight players found the scoreboard and only Madison Stenzel reached double figures with 12 points.

Jessica Spry added nine.

The Bears led 20-9 at intermission and padded their lead in the second stanza.
