When Lora Plessinger started up her own Bemidji cleaning business nearly a year ago - Mama's Hose and Mop -free service wasn't the original intention.
However, after stumbling upon the Cleaning for a Reason Web site, Plessinger decided to look into it.
The organization, started in 2006 in Lewisville, Texas, was founded as a nonprofit organization to provide women undergoing cancer treatment with a free, professional housecleaning service.
The mission of the group is that while fighting cancer is difficult enough, and living with it is even tougher, having a clean house can be one less thing to worry about, according to the Web site.
"I went across it and I thought, 'Wow, that's pretty amazing.'" Plessinger said. "The nearest one was in St. Cloud, so I thought I'd try to bring it to the region to get it going on."
Plessinger said she hasn't had any customers for the free service yet, but she had only signed up for the organization about a month ago.
Through the organization, cleaning service companies can sign up and pay a monthly fee to be a part of the foundation, Plessinger said, and women in need of the service can locate the nearest one.
The subject is a personal one for Plessinger, too. Plessinger lost a grandmother and sister-in-law to brain cancer.
"It's close to me and it's a good thing to give back to the community," she said.
