Clarence Joseph "Joe" Sayers Sr.

Clarence Joseph "Joe" Sayers Sr., age 65, of Red Lake Journeyed to the Spirit World on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at Indian Health Services in Red Lake.

"Joe" was born on July 30, 1948 in Red Lake the son of Alvin C. "Skippy" & Ida Marie "Baby Girl" Sayers.

He was educated in Red Lake, graduating from Red Lake High School in 1967.

Upon his graduation Joe enlisted in the United States Army from 1967-1971. Joe served in Viet Nam and was awarded two Purple Hearts. Upon his Honorable Discharge Joe embarked on a self-employed Race Relations Advocate and worked tirelessly improving Race Relations for all Native Americans. Until health issues forced him into an early retirement.

In his younger years, Joe enjoyed sports and was a talented basketball player. Joe especially loved traveling to Pow-Wows through out Indian Country. Joe also loved trips to Native casinos to gamble and socialize. Joe had many lifelong friends from his travels through out the United States and Canada.

He was preceded in death by his parents: "Baby Girl" and "Skippy", two children: John "Jack" Sayers and Clarence "J.R." Sayers and three aunts who helped raise him: Florence King, Martha Brun and Ida Cook; several aunts and uncles.

Survived by his children: Francis "Frank" Blue, Florence "Flo" Sayers and a special sister: Mary Brun; other relatives and friends.

Funeral services for Clarence Sayers Sr. will be held on Thursday, January 16th, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at St. Marys Catholic Church in Red Lake. Father Jerry Rogers will be the Celebrants.

Interment will follow at The Red Lake Cemetery.

All night wakes will be held on Tuesday, January 14th and Wednesday, January 15th beginning at 7:00 P.M. at The Red Lake Community Center.

Drum Group will be "Eyabay Singers".

Honorary Casket Bearers will be Francis "Ohunky" Brun, James "Jimmy Boy" Brun, Donald Cook Sr., Fadian "Nickel" Cook, Hank Cook, Dwight "IGGY" Sayers, Fabian Sayers, Jackie Sayers, Rae Lnn Sayers and The Staff and friends at Jourdain-Perpich Extended Care Facility in Red Lake.

Casket Bearers will be Brian Brun Sr., Ronald Brun, Pat Brun, Jason King, Richard "Dahl" Cook, Curtis Jourdain Sr., Franklin "Will" , Donald "Donnie Bo" Brun, Ramon Sayers, James "Jim" King and Francis "Zonce" Bruan.
