The Bemidji Economic Development Authority approved the purchase of the North Central Door property Tuesday night.

The 10-acre parcel is in the 130 acres that the city intends to purchase along the south shore of Lake Bemidji. The City Council plans to locate the proposed events center on that property.

The city agreed to purchase the North Central Door land for $868,500 and to also cover more than $22,000 in outstanding assessments for improvements to First Street Southeast, city staff said.

The sellers originally were requesting $1.1 million for the property, City Attorney Al Felix said.

The purchase will include both the land and the existing buildings, some of which may be able to be moved, staff said.

The property is needed to improve access to the area by way of First Street and Grant Avenue Southeast, staff said.

The closing date was set for February. Bonding will likely be used to buy the land, Felix said.

The purchase was the second land deal approved by the city in as many weeks. Last Monday, the City Council unanimously voted to approve a purchase agreement for property owned by Joe and Vicki Waslaski. That property, which cost $125,000, also is located in the south shore area.
